Left something at the hotel? Make a lost-property request easy to trace

The charger is missing when you unpack, and the last place you remember using it is beside the hotel bed. A useful lost-property request gives the hotel enough detail to search and identify the item without exposing your booking information in public.

Marriott’s lost-item guidance recommends contacting the property directly and providing stay details and a description. Other hotels may use different forms, holding periods and return arrangements, so confirm the procedure with the place where you stayed.

Describe the item as if several similar ones exist

“A black charger” may fit a drawer full of objects. Add the make, connector type, distinguishing wear or attached cable if you know them. Explain the likely location and when you last saw it. A photograph of the item can help, but do not include unnecessary personal documents.

Send your name, stay dates and booking reference through the hotel’s verified contact channel. If you remember the room number, include it privately. Keep one clear account of the loss rather than submitting several slightly different reports to unrelated departments.

Finding it is separate from returning it

Ask how the hotel verifies ownership and whether collection by another person is possible. If shipping is offered, confirm the address, cost, courier arrangement and any restrictions before paying. Batteries, liquids or valuable objects may need a different process.

Be cautious with an unexpected payment link. Verify a return request through the contact details you independently obtained from the hotel, especially if the message arrives from an unfamiliar account. Never provide a device password merely to help someone identify a laptop or phone.

If the item cannot be found immediately, ask for a reference number and an appropriate follow-up time. Do not assume it will be stored indefinitely. For a missing bank card, passport or essential medication, contact the relevant issuer, authority or healthcare provider promptly instead of relying solely on the hotel’s search.

A concise request with identifiable details gives staff a practical task to complete. It also leaves you with a record of what was reported, what was found and what still needs arranging.
