Thoughtful stays, better journeys.

Hotel loyalty points may not apply to every booking channel

A hotel stay can be genuine, paid for and linked to your name without qualifying for the loyalty points you expected. The missing detail may be how the room was booked or which rate was used, rather than whether you remembered to show a membership card at reception.

For example, Marriott Bonvoy’s explanation of qualifying rates distinguishes eligible rates from several non-qualifying arrangements, including third-party booking channels. That is one programme’s rule, not a universal promise about every hotel chain. Brand exceptions and partner arrangements can also matter.

Compare the complete booking, not only the points headline

Before paying, identify the seller, the hotel, the rate conditions and the loyalty programme. A hotel name on a booking page does not prove that the page is an official booking channel. If the point eligibility is unclear, ask the programme or property to confirm it for the exact reservation method and rate.

Keep room price, cancellation terms, included breakfast and expected benefits in separate columns. A cheaper booking might still be the better choice even if it earns no points; an eligible booking might cost more than the benefit is worth to you. Do not give an uncertain points balance a guaranteed cash value in the comparison.

Also separate earning points from receiving a particular on-property benefit. They may have different conditions. A late-checkout request, room upgrade or breakfast entitlement should be checked against the relevant programme rules rather than inferred from the presence of a membership number.

Keep the evidence that makes a missing-credit enquiry possible

Save the confirmation, rate description and final receipt. Check that the membership number is correct and that the name matches the programme account. After the stay, allow the programme’s stated processing period before submitting a missing-credit request through its official route.

A useful pre-booking question is: “Will this exact rate, booked through this channel, earn points and an eligible-night credit?” It is specific enough to produce a useful answer and easier to verify than asking whether the hotel simply participates in a loyalty scheme.
