The nation's largest retailer, Walmart, is addressing this issue by revamping its training program to increase the pipeline of maintenance technicians. Lowe's, a home improvement retailer, has also initiated a 90-day online training program for employees interested in carpentry and utility maintenance, and has invested $43 million in organizations to recruit and train skilled tradespeople. However, experts like Mervin Jebaraj from the University of Arkansas note that these programs will help but won't eliminate the gap, especially with Trump's immigration clampdown. Walmart CEO Doug McMillon attributes the shortages to a lack of awareness, emphasizing the need to promote these roles to attract talent. Walmart's own training initiative, launched in 2024, focuses on its workers with tuition-free training in Dallas-Fort Worth, and plans to expand to other locations. Maintenance technician roles are vital to Walmart's operations, especially during the holiday season, where a single refrigeration system failure can result in significant financial losses.
