Embracing their Canadian identity might give them the extra boost they need on what will essentially be hostile ice.
But here's where it gets controversial... Is this selection a stroke of genius, or a nostalgic reach? While The Tragically Hip remain beloved across Canada, it's important to remember that they haven't performed live since 2016, and the band's frontman, Gord Downie, tragically passed away shortly after in 2017. The players on this year's Team Canada roster were mostly born in 2006 and 2007, meaning they were only around nine or ten years old when The Hip last graced the stage. Top 2026 NHL draft prospect Gavin McKenna, however, seems to think it's a perfect fit. "I think we got a lot of courage in this group," McKenna said after the game. "We lost last year, there's a lot of eyes on us, and we wanna have courage. Obviously, a Canadian band, so hopefully the Canadian fans like it."
