South African startup Hyena is developing a groundbreaking solution to reduce Africa's reliance on diesel generators, a common source of power for many homes and businesses due to unreliable grid coverage. These generators, while providing energy, contribute to air pollution, respiratory issues, and global warming. Hyena's innovative POWER PODs offer a cleaner alternative, converting liquid petroleum gas (LPG) into hydrogen and then into electricity, producing heat and water as by-products. This process eliminates harmful particulates and reduces carbon dioxide emissions by 15% compared to diesel generators. The POWER PODs are designed for off-grid or unreliable energy supply locations, addressing a critical need in Africa. The technology is not new, but Hyena's unique approach is to produce hydrogen from LPG, a widely available and easily stored gas, making it accessible and practical for widespread use. This innovation has the potential to revolutionize fuel cell technology across the continent, especially for powering telecommunications towers, which currently rely on hybrid systems due to frequent grid outages. The first proof-of-concept deployment is set for early 2026. While the technology is promising, challenges remain, including the need for more investors and addressing potential barriers to adoption, such as training and cost.
