Sonos is making headlines again with the launch of its latest hardware offering, the Amp Multi, a sophisticated multi-channel amplifier tailored for larger residences boasting complex audio arrangements. This marks a significant return to product development for the company, which has been relatively quiet since the release of the Sonos Arc in late 2024. During that period, Sonos faced considerable backlash due to a problematic app update that not only introduced numerous bugs but also eliminated several beloved features. This misstep created widespread confusion and frustration among loyal customers, leading to a tarnished reputation for the brand.
In response to these challenges, former CEO Patrick Spence stepped down, paving the way for current CEO Thomas Conrad, who made the strategic decision to halt the rollout of a much-anticipated video streaming device. Instead, Conrad’s focus shifted toward rectifying software issues and restoring customer confidence, with the introduction of the Amp Multi representing a pivotal first step in this rejuvenation effort.
The Amp Multi is designed as a robust digital amplifier capable of handling multiple devices, setting it apart from Sonos's more consumer-oriented products. Its primary function is to connect traditional speakers to a central unit, allowing users to integrate various audio equipment seamlessly. However, this product is likely best suited for those whose homes are equipped with an extensive array of speakers.
Thomas Conrad remarked, "Sonos Amp is the most widely used two-channel streaming amplifier in residential installations because it’s powerful, dependable, and intuitive. Amp Multi takes that same philosophy and applies it to larger systems. It makes ambitious designs more efficient to build and install, and easier to live with."
Sonos plans to make the Amp Multi available globally through its network of installation partners in the upcoming months. Although the price has yet to be announced, the existing Sonos Amp retails for $799, suggesting that the Amp Multi may fall within a similar pricing structure.
This launch could be indicative of further product developments from Sonos in the near future. Are we on the verge of seeing new wireless speakers and soundbars enter the market soon? Only time will tell, but the excitement surrounding Sonos's latest offerings certainly raises questions about what they might unveil next.
