In a thrilling matchup, Kane has officially reached the milestone of 500 career goals in the NHL, marking him as the 50th player in league history to achieve this impressive feat. During the game against the Canucks, he scored his 499th goal at 19:31 in the first period while the Red Wings enjoyed a 5-on-3 power play. He then sealed his historic moment by putting the puck into an empty net at 16:07 of the third period for goal number 500. The entire Red Wings bench erupted in celebration to honor Kane's accomplishment.
"Honestly, I feel a sense of relief to have achieved it and to move past it," Kane shared after the game. "It’s certainly an amazing feeling, especially coming in tonight knowing I was at 498. Scoring that first one early on was fantastic, and usually, I'm not out there when the net is empty.
"Getting that chance and hearing the crowd go wild when I stepped onto the ice was incredible. Then, having the puck come right to me for my 500th goal felt amazing."
The Red Wings had strong performances from J.T. Compher, Lucas Raymond, and Axel Sandin-Pellikka, each contributing with a goal and an assist. Detroit's record now stands at 26 wins, 15 losses, and 4 overtime losses, having faced some challenges with two losses in their last three games. James van Riemsdyk also assisted twice, while goaltender John Gibson made an impressive 23 saves to secure the win.
On the other side, Jake DeBrusk managed to score for the struggling Canucks, who have now faced five consecutive defeats, with a current record of 16 wins, 22 losses, and 5 overtime losses. Goalie Kevin Lankinen recorded 20 saves during the game.
The pivotal moment came late in the first period when Vancouver incurred two minor penalties within a span of just nine seconds. This provided the Red Wings with a significant opportunity, leading to a 5-on-3 advantage for 1 minute and 51 seconds. Although the Canucks initially held off the Red Wings for 1:35, Kane struck first for Detroit, giving them a 1-0 lead at 19:31. After receiving a pass from Raymond on the right side, he expertly maneuvered across the high slot, dropped down to the left face-off circle, and unleashed a powerful wrist shot that found its mark past Lankinen’s blocker.
This milestone assist from Raymond also marked his 300th point in the NHL, with a total of 110 goals and 190 assists over 363 games played.
The Red Wings extended their lead to 2-0 early in the second period, thanks to Sandin-Pellikka’s fifth goal, with assists credited to van Riemsdyk and Compher just 5 minutes and 9 seconds into the period.
DeBrusk responded for Vancouver with a power-play goal at 7:03, converting Kiefer Sherwood’s pass for his 12th goal of the season, narrowing the score to 2-1. However, Detroit’s third line struck again at 10:10, increasing the gap to 3-1. Van Riemsdyk set up Compher, who was alone at the crease, allowing him to score his fifth goal of the season, with Sandin-Pellikka assisting once more.
Finally, Raymond capped off the scoring at 18:10, leading to a commanding 5-1 victory for the Red Wings.
