After nearly two decades of leading the Baltimore Ravens, John Harbaugh's tenure came to a stunning end this past week: He was fired over the phone. This abrupt decision, as reported by multiple sources, marks a significant shift in the NFL landscape.
Harbaugh, aged 63, had been the second-longest-tenured head coach in the league, trailing only division rival Mike Tomlin. His impressive record includes a 180-113 regular season and a 13-11 postseason, highlighted by a Super Bowl XLVII victory in 2012. But here's where it gets controversial: an 8-9 season in 2025, which resulted in the Ravens missing the playoffs for the first time since 2021, seemingly sealed his fate.
According to Dianna Russini and Jeff Zrebiec of The Athletic, Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti delivered the news via a phone call. This method is quite unusual, especially considering Harbaugh's nearly 18 years of service.
The report emphasized that this was a firing, not a resignation or a mutual agreement. Bisciotti later provided a more detailed explanation, but the initial news came as a shock. "[He] no longer saw Harbaugh, his longtime coach and friend, as the right person to do it,” Russini and Zrebiec wrote.
But here's a point that might spark debate: The sources suggested that the narrative of Harbaugh losing the locker room was inaccurate. One source called it “B.S.” Another added that while losing magnifies everything, the situation never felt truly dire.
Now, back on the market for the first time since 2008, Harbaugh is expected to be a hot commodity in the current coaching cycle.
Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer reports that Harbaugh will begin interviewing next week. The Miami Dolphins have already expressed interest, joining six other franchises.
