The latest update to iOS, version 26, has brought about significant changes to the Phone app that I find indispensable.
Apple has taken a fresh approach with the Phone app in iOS 26, introducing a sleek new design along with a variety of enhanced features. Among these upgrades, one addition stands out for me: the innovative call screening option that I truly believe is essential.
In the extensive list of enhancements that iOS 26 offers, Apple prioritized improvements to communication applications like Messages and Phone. This release marks the most substantial redesign of the Phone app in several years, incorporating not only stunning new ringtones but also the highly useful Live Translation feature, among other updates.
However, the feature that I find particularly noteworthy is the call screening capability.
Previously, iOS allowed users to silence calls from numbers that aren’t saved in their Contacts, Mail, or Messages. While this was effective in reducing spam calls, it also had its downsides; legitimate calls from unknown numbers could easily go unnoticed. Users were faced with a dilemma: either let all calls ring through or risk missing important ones by filtering them out.
With the introduction of iOS 26, there’s now a thoughtful compromise that significantly improves the experience.
The new feature, titled ‘Ask Reason for Calling,’ can be found within the Settings app under Apps and then Phone, where you’ll locate the 'Screen Unknown Callers' section. Here, users can choose from three options:
- Never: All calls from unsaved numbers will ring, and any missed calls will be recorded in the Recents list.
- Ask Reason for Calling: When receiving a call from an unsaved number, the system will prompt the caller to provide information before the phone actually rings.
- Silence: Calls from unsaved numbers will be muted, directed to voicemail, and listed in the Recents section.
The ‘Ask Reason for Calling’ feature is a novel addition that has become invaluable for determining whether or not to pick up an incoming call. Like many people, I often hesitate when an unknown number calls, weighing the possibility of it being a spam call against the chance that it might be something important.
If the call pertains to something crucial, I prefer to answer promptly. However, the risk of handling an unsolicited call always lingers in the back of my mind.
Thanks to iOS 26, this decision-making process has been greatly simplified. By asking for the caller's identity and purpose right away, I can assess the situation without the annoyance of an unexpected ringtone interrupting me.
For anyone who deals with spam calls but finds the extreme measure of silencing all unknown callers too drastic, I highly recommend trying out this new screening feature.
