Twin Ports Power 5: Traveling Sneakers and a Musical Tribute
Last week, I found myself in a familiar predicament, juggling multiple pairs of sneakers for different occasions. As a sports reporter, I often find myself at hockey rinks, where boots are the norm, but basketball courts demand something else. So, I embarked on a quest for the perfect basketball sneakers.
But here's the twist: I already owned a pair of traveling sneakers, and they were right under my nose. It all began with a unique purchase a couple of years ago. Nike released a special edition of Dunks, featuring three different colors inspired by the Grateful Dead.
As a long-time fan, I couldn't resist. I saw an ad on social media and, with my wife's approval, I made the purchase. The fuzzy yellow shoes arrived, and I couldn't help but smile, knowing they were a tribute to my favorite band. But in my haste to write about my shoe choices, I somehow forgot about these Grateful Dead Dunks. It's not surprising, given my recent trip to Colorado and eastern Washington, where I witnessed five Dead & Co. shows, creating unforgettable memories.
Speaking of the Grateful Dead, the recent passing of Bobby Weir left me reflecting on the band's legacy. I recalled the trip where I saw Bob Weir and Rat Dog at Ovens Auditorium in Charlotte, North Carolina, and the Barcelona Olympics in 1992, where Lithuania wore basketball jerseys inspired by the Grateful Dead.
So, when covering a basketball game between Duluth Denfeld and Duluth East, I decided to pay homage to Bobby and the Dead. I wore my tie-dyed hoodie and, of course, my Grateful Dead Dunks.
Now, onto the rankings. The Twin Ports Power 5 is a list of the top five basketball teams in the Northland, regardless of class size. It's a dynamic ranking, as teams can rise and fall based on their performance.
Hibbing (10-3): The Bluejackets are on a roll, with junior big man Ray Brau averaging over 26 points per game and shooting nearly 64% from the field. They're a force to be reckoned with, but their upcoming games against Grand Rapids and Duluth Denfeld will determine their next steps.
Superior (9-3): The Spartans are struggling with injuries, particularly senior forward Calvin Anderson's knee injury. Despite their setbacks, they remain a top contender, and their upcoming games will be crucial.
Cherry (11-2): Cherry's shooting performance against Esko was an anomaly, but they've bounced back with wins over Littlefork-Big Falls and Sacred Heart. They're back on track and aiming for a section title.
Grand Rapids (9-3): The Thunderhawks are on a seven-game winning streak, showcasing their fast and physical brand of basketball. With a dominant lineup, they're a legitimate playoff threat.
Northwestern (6-3): Northwestern's Kamden Kroll is a standout player, with exceptional shooting and playmaking abilities. Despite a few losses, the Tigers have the potential to make a run this season.
