The holiday season is a time for joy and reflection, and for one Grand Canyon University alumna, it's a chance to bring a beloved Christmas story to life on stage. Mikayla Cavanaugh's journey from a local youth theatre in Las Vegas to a national tour of 'A Christmas Carol' is an inspiring tale of passion and perseverance.
Mikayla's love for theatre began at an early age when she joined a youth theatre company. Her talent and dedication quickly became evident as she rose to the top of cast lists for every production. "That theatre company was my haven," she shares. "It's where I truly discovered my passion for acting."
While her studies at GCU focused on psychology, Mikayla's heart remained in Ethington Theatre. She actively participated in various productions, including 'Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat', 'SpongeBob SquarePants The Musical', and her college finale, 'Little Women'. Her versatility and stage presence were evident in each role, from the whimsical 'Mary Poppins' to the enchanting 'Beauty and the Beast'.
"Mikayla's growth during her time at GCU was remarkable," says Michael Kary, assistant theatre professor. "Her portrayal of Chip in 'Beauty and the Beast' was adorable, and her Amy in 'Little Women' shone with a perfect blend of innocence and maturity. When I heard about her casting in the 'Christmas Carol' tour, I knew it was a perfect fit."
But here's where it gets controversial... Mikayla's role in 'Little Women' and her experiences at GCU's theatre department played a pivotal role in preparing her for the professional world. "The tour is small, and everyone has other jobs," she explains. "GCU's theatre department taught me to be versatile. We weren't just actors; we learned the tech side too. Michael Kary's professional approach to rehearsals made the transition to a professional environment seamless."
Since late November, Mikayla has been on the road, bringing Charles Dickens' classic to life along the east coast. The story of Ebenezer Scrooge, a grumpy old man transformed by the spirits of Christmas past, present, and future, is a beloved tale. Through powerful flashbacks, Scrooge's journey is a reminder of the true spirit of Christmas and the joy of giving.
Mikayla portrays Martha Cratchit, the daughter of Scrooge's clerk, but her versatility extends beyond this role. She also understudies for other characters and serves as the team's wardrobe supervisor. Her first professional experience has been a whirlwind of late nights, grueling travel, and rigorous rehearsals, but the joy of spreading Christmas cheer makes it all worthwhile.
And this is the part most people miss... the hard work and dedication that goes into a professional tour. It's a testament to Mikayla's talent and the support she received at GCU. Her journey is a reminder that with passion and perseverance, dreams can become reality.
