A fatal incident at the former Irish Glass Bottle site in Dublin has prompted a formal inquiry by the Health and Safety Authority (HSA). Investigators are looking into what happened at the Ringsend construction project, where Gardaí and emergency crews were dispatched on Friday afternoon.
A spokesperson for Sisk, the contractor responsible for the initial phase, stated that they are aware of an incident at the Glass Bottle site and are examining the circumstances, promising to provide updates as more details emerge.
The HSA confirmed it has launched a formal investigation into a fatal incident at the location and indicated that no additional information is available at this moment.
The development consortium Pembroke Beach—which includes Ronan Group Real Estate (RGRE) led by Johnny Ronan, the U.S. private equity firm Oaktree, and development partner Lioncor—nears completion on the first 570 homes at the former industrial grounds on the Poolbeg Peninsula. The ambitious project spans about 15 hectares of vacant land being transformed into a residential-led scheme featuring up to 3,800 apartments alongside community facilities and office space.
A Garda spokesperson said emergency services were at the scene Friday afternoon and that details were still developing as the situation unfolded.
Ireland has recorded 32 workplace fatalities this year up to September 22, according to HSA figures. Of these, five occurred in construction, with more than half of all fatalities in sectors such as agriculture, forestry, and fishing.
In 2024, construction-related fatalities totaled five, a drop from ten in 2023. Looking back over a decade (2015–2024), construction workplace fatalities in Ireland sum to 92.
And this is where the broader conversation becomes important: even as progress reduces risk, each incident underscores how safety standards and enforcement impact every project, from large-scale developments to small sites.
