In a striking display of camaraderie, Colby Covington and Luke Rockhold took the opportunity to join forces at the pre-fight press conference for RAF 5, despite being opponents in the upcoming event. Their collective target? The rising middleweight star Bo Nickal, who is also slated to compete on the card against Yoel Romero in the co-main event on Saturday in Sunrise, Florida. Nickal’s attempt to assert himself during the press conference did not sit well with Covington and Rockhold.
Covington didn’t hold back his disdain, labeling Nickal as a ‘bozo’ and suggesting that figures like him undermine the sport of wrestling. “Listen, it’s the type of bozos like this that just kill the sport of wrestling. We need stars. We need people that are willing to be vocal and call their shots,” he stated emphatically, underscoring the importance of charisma and personality in the sporting arena.
When Nickal attempted to challenge Covington directly, the seasoned welterweight fighter quickly dismissed him, bringing up Nickal's recent defeat to Reinier de Ridder, which marked the first blemish on Nickal’s professional MMA record. "No, that’d be too easy, bro, you’re a bum. You got broken by a Dutch kickboxer. You’re a bum, dude. You’re not even the main event, there’s a reason," Covington responded sharply, reinforcing his superiority in the combat sports hierarchy.
Despite this setback, Nickal managed to bounce back with an impressive head-kick knockout victory over Rodolfo Vieira at UFC 322, boosting his professional record to 8-1. However, it’s his previous accolades in collegiate wrestling that have paved his way to the RAF roster, having won three national titles during his time at Penn State before making the transition to mixed martial arts.
Rockhold, echoing Covington’s sentiments, joined the verbal onslaught, cautioning Nickal against disrespecting experienced fighters who have long been established in the octagon. “You should make the top 10 before you start talking about a sport that built another sport,” Rockhold advised. “The reason why wrestling is here on this stage is because of MMA. You’ve done absolutely nothing in the sport of MMA. You quit. You quit before the knee even hit you, Bo. So just button it up.”
He further escalated the confrontation by proposing a matchup under modified rules, issuing a direct threat to Nickal: “I will put you to sleep.” Rockhold didn’t shy away from bragging about his accomplishments either, asking rhetorically, “How many world championships have I won? What have you even done on a world stage? Absolutely nothing. You’re a college bum. Shut up.”
This exchange not only reveals the competitive nature of these fighters but also opens up a broader discussion on the relationship between different combat sports and the significance of respect among athletes. But here's where it gets controversial: Are established athletes like Covington and Rockhold justified in dismissing newcomers based solely on their past accomplishments? What do you think?
